Barcelona is a melting pot of cultures. People from all over the world stroll its streets. Many are just visiting, while others are drawn by the beautiful weather and food and are fascinated by the city. In reality, Barcelona’s appeal is nothing new. Communities of different origins have always coexisted on its streets.
One of them is undoubtedly the Jewish community. Their presence in Barcelona is documented since 850, when they were mentioned in a letter. However, it wasn’t until the end of the 11th century that they founded the El Call neighborhood, now located in the city center. The opening last year of the MUHBA El Call center, in the heart of the old Jewish quarter, has made this neighborhood and this community once again gain relevance on cultural tours of Barcelona.
There was a time when Barcelona had two Jewish neighborhoods: El Call and the so-called Call Menor, established around 1257. The community also had its own cemetery located on Montjuïc Hill. After the rise of the Inquisition, part of the community decided to leave, but its legacy remains present in the city’s streets.
Aware of this, Toldot offers a unique experience on the streets of Barcelona. This platform, created to promote and recover the forgotten Catalan Jewish heritage, organizes unique experiences to bring the public closer to a forgotten cultural treasure. Thanks to its research, it is possible to enjoy an ancient Jewish culinary feast. Held in a house in the old Jewish quarter, Casa Adret, the dinner becomes a celebration of traditional recipes blended with stories from bygone times.

But that’s not all. Toldot also offers walking tours to discover key sites of Jewish history in Barcelona. Walks through the Gothic Quarter and Eixample district allow you to experience their heritage firsthand.
